Traditional Anniversary Presents

-- Traditional Anniversary Presents --

Since the middle ages, it has been traditional to give specific gifts to a couple based on the number of years they have been married. This practice is thought to have originated in Central Europe. Traditionally, a husband would give his wife a silver garland after they had been married for twenty-five years – hence, “Silver Anniversary.” The 50th anniversary is known as the gold anniversary. The Victorian era was also a popular time for giving gifts based on the length of a marriage.

In the 20th century, Emily Post herself listed “eight anniversaries know to all” in her famous social etiquette book, in which she made note of the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversaries. In her book, she also indicated a trend toward giving gifts on every anniversary; particularly the every five years. The American National Retail Jeweler Association issued a comprehensive list in 1937, associating a different material to each year of marriage.

The idea of giving a gift for each year of anniversary is to recognize that the pair have grown stronger as a couple. In general, gifts start off quite simply, such as paper or flowers, and get more and more expensive as the years go on, ultimately leading to gold and diamonds. These days, there is typically a “modern” gift associated to each year of marriage as well.

When it comes to giving a modern anniversary gift, don’t be afraid to get creative within the theme. For example, for “pearls” on the 12th anniversary, you could give a beautiful frame adorned with pearls, rather than a pearl necklace. Adding personalization to a gift always makes it extra special. Consider having your gift engraved with a special, thoughtful message to make it truly touch the recipient’s heart.
