Traditional TownsIf shopping for local arts and crafts, which are beautiful and interesting, are on your agenda, then a trip to Chichicastenango in the Mayan highlands is a great trip. The traditional market offers some great finds, and a lot cheaper than the curio stores in the cities! Mayan RuinsGuatemala is covered in ruins from the ancient Mayan ruins, like those at El Mirador, which is possibly the cradle of Mayan civilization, and is actually still being excavated. If you like history and want to explore the ruins of this fascinating culture’s cities, temples and other artifacts, then this is a fantastic country to visit! Until the excavations at El Mirador are completed, the ruins of the city at Tikal are the biggest known Mayan ruins, so they are definitely also worth a visit – it’s a little like taking a trip in a time machine, and you can almost picture Mayan maidens and warriors in the city.
Volcanic BeachesThey may not be white sand, but the volcanic beaches, like Monterrico near Guatemala City and Antigua still have amazing water, and a relaxed vibe that are all you really need at the beach – well, along with fun, sun and sand!
Lake AtitlanHow does spending some time on the shores of a mountain lake, with interesting traditional villages, volcanoes and water sports on offer? If that’s your idea of heaven, then Lake Atitlan is an ideal location. Tour a Volcano Only half an hour outside Antigua is the Pacaya volcano, which is still active. You can take a tour of the volcano, with a guide, and then head off to the Kawalil spa to have a different volcano experience – a luxurious treatment using hot spring water that comes from the volcano!With food that is interesting, but less spicy than Mexican fare, beaches, lakes and volcanoes, a fabulous tropical climate that means you can pack light, cities, towns and history, no matter what you’re looking for in a vacation, you will be very likely to find it in Guatemala.
