Things To Do In Germany

-- Things To Do In Germany --

Things To Do In Germany

When you think of Germany, you probably think of the big cities – Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, or maybe you think of the autobahn, or one of the other typically German things we all know: sauerkraut, lederhosen, Oktoberfest or luxury sedans.

If you really want to see the magic of Germany though, you need to venture a little off the beaten track. And magic there is. From fairytale castles to amazing wilderness areas, there’s a lot more to Germany than you might think!

Neuschwanstein

The name might not sound like anything romantic at all, but this is King Ludwig the second’s famous castle, which looks like it belongs in a fairytale. In fact, this is the castle that inspired Walt Disney when he built his own castle in the magic kingdom, so if you love a little magic, make sure you go and see the real thing!

The Black Forest

If you think Black Forest is only a delicious cake, think again! Yes, this is the place where the cake came from (and you can still find them here), but the Black Forest is much more. It’s a part of Germany that’s filled with quaint old world towns, mountains, rivers and of course, forests, and is perfect if you want a secluded mountain getaway, away from the rat race, or if you love hiking, or skiing. There are also several spas in this area, so if you’re in need of some pampering, it’s the perfect German destination for you.

The Bavarian Alps

Another part of Germany that looks like it came straight off a postcard, the Bavarian Alps are also famous for skiing and other winter sports in the winter, and hiking and relaxing in the green meadows of the foothills in summer.

Whether you ski or not, there are fantastic little resort towns here, where you can just enjoy the winter wonderland, or visit one of the crystal clear lakes.

Checkpoint Charlie

Not quite off the beaten track, being in the middle of Berlin, but Checkpoint Charlie, the last remaining piece of the Berlin wall, is definitely worth a visit. Particularly now, since 2009 is the twenty year anniversary of the fall of the wall.

Saxony Switzerland

Things To Do In Germany

Probably the last thing you think of when you think of Germany is wide open space, nature, animals and birds. But that’s exactly what you get in Saxony Switzerland National Park. Amazing rock formations, cliffs, valleys and plains, with falcons, otters and other wildlife on view.

It’s clear that if you plan a trip to Germany, there are many options other than the obvious, that will offer you a fantastic, romantic and relaxing getaway. Of course, if you do go in October, no one would argue with paying the Oktoberfest a visit, and sampling the beer out of a stein. Neither would anyone complain too much if you opened up on the autobahn.

If you’re looking for a great mix of modern and traditional, natural and manmade, relaxed country side and bustling cities, then Germany is quite possibly the choice for you. And while you’re there, you can sample that amazing cake, taste test wines and beer, and maybe have a wurst or two, with some sauerkraut?
