Things To Do In Belgium

Things To Do In Belgium

Belgium is a very low profile Country. Not in the news that often, rarely the center of any scandal, and altogether incognito. It does manage to offer some pretty amazing sights and experiences though, and if you are planning a European vacation, you might want to include Belgium on your list of places to visit.

Here are a few of the reasons why..

Food, Chocolate and Beer

When you’re talking food, and Belgium, you’re not talking just any food. The Belgian people really know how to live the good life. Moules, or mussels, are one of the national dishes, and whether you enjoy this delectable little shellfish in a white wine or cream sauce, you’re sure to eat far more than you should! Then again, shellfish is rumored to be a food of love, so if you’re traveling with a loved one, what could be better?

Follow up your moules with some of the world’s finest chocolates. There are festivals, and even museums dedicated to the sweet confection, so if you love the sweeter things in life, Belgium is a great place to enjoy them.

Last, but not least, Belgium is the home to some of the world’s finest beers, and if you are in the country, be sure to try one of the Krieks. Cherry flavored, they remind me of the taste of sherbet filled lollipops! Delicious.

Brussels

While Belgium is low key, it is also the home of both NATO and the EC, and Brussels is the heart of all that. Visit the city for the history, or to take in the restaurants, nightlife and architecture, or go see where some of the world’s major political decisions are made.

Then again, if politics is not your thing, you could take a stroll through the Grand Place, which has been called the most beautiful square in the world. Or you could go to the Comic Strip Centre, started by the creator of Lucky Luke, and the Smurfs.

Mannekin Pis is another unique sight in the beautiful city of Brussels. This little boy has been standing on the corner of Stoofstraat/Rue de L'Etuve and the Eikstraat/Rue du Chêne for centuries, and he’s the pride and joy of the people of Brussels.

Take a Riverboat Cruise

Another great thing to do in Belgium is take a river boat cruise between one of the historic cities, through the countryside. There are trips between Bruges and Ghent, or on the Escaut, Willebroek or Meuse rivers and canals. Great for a relaxing, laid back way to see the country.

Christmas

Things To Do In Belgium

Christmas in Belgium means more than trees, eggnog and turkeys. In Belgium, Christmas is traditionally celebrated with Christmas markets, so it’s a great time to visit, enjoy the snow, browse the markets, and remember what makes the holidays magical.

Belgium may not be in the public eye as much as some of its neighbors, but with all these attractions, as well as pubs, clubs, historical monuments and museums, opera, jazz, and a whole lot more, there’s sure to be something for anyone. Then again, sometimes it’s nice to go to places where there aren’t that many tourists, so you can see the real country.
