Ever since it was first presented to the United States by France, way back in 1886, to commemorate its centennial, the Statue of Liberty, or Liberty Enlightening the world as it’s officially titled, has been a symbol of the United States, and New York. Visiting the Big Apple without paying Lady Liberty a visit would be unthinkable! If you're planning a trip to the Big Apple, take a look at the sites below. They'll give you special deals on tours and sightseeing for all of the major attractions in New York. NYC Sightseeing The New York Pass
The Statue ItselfTo call the Statue of Liberty a statue seems strange. My idea of a statue is something small and white that decorates a suburban garden. Lady Liberty is nothing like that! Forty six meters tall, she’s manufactured from copper sheeting, covering a steel frame. Her torch is gilded, but it’s also been modified to contain windows, so that visitors can look out over the city of New York. Of course, if you add the base on which the Lady stands, her total height is around ninety three meters. Nothing at all like those garden decorations! -- Statue Of Liberty Tours --

A Modern Take on Ancient ThemesThe Statue of Liberty might have been built during the late 1800’s, but the inspiration comes from a lot further back than that. In fact, she’s been modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes, and on Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. Her torch signifies enlightenment, and the tablet she holds contains a reference to the declaration of independence. Her twin is on display in Paris.
Not an Easy ProjectIt’s difficult to imagine today, as you stand looking up at New York City’s most famous lady resident, but the construction of the statue, and the plinth it stands on, was delayed several times, thanks to a lack of funding. In fact, while the lady was completed on time, the plinth was delayed so much that she rested for eleven months in crates, waiting for it to be finished. Interestingly enough, when she was first completed, the Statue of Liberty functioned as a lighthouse, and continued to be a lighthouse until 1902. -- Statue Of Liberty Tours --
Visiting Liberty IslandLiberty Island, as the island in New York has been officially known since 1956, is a huge tourist attraction, with good reason. | | Photo By Nicolas Hennette | Standing outside the Statue, she looks exactly as you would expect her to. Inside however, is a different story! Looking up, all you see is the steel girder structure. There’s also a museum complex in the base, where you can see replica’s of the face of the lady, in their original copper color, the original torch, which was replaced during repairs, and other attractions. Walking up the single file circular staircase to the crown does give you a unique view of New York – but pack sensible shoes, and prepare yourself for a workout – there are three hundred and fifty four steps to climb before you reach the twenty five windows in the crown! If you are going to be in New York, make sure you make the time to visit the Lady Liberty, find out more about her fascinating history, and take the long walk up to her crown. It’s one of those experiences that you will never, ever forget, and a must do for any tourist to one of the world’s greatest cities. -- Statue Of Liberty Tours --
