If you’d like to visit Mexico’s Riviera Maya, but don’t quite feel up to the admittedly crazy pace of Cancun, then Puerto Vallarta is a great alternative.
It’s got the same great weather, as well as the warm blue Caribbean on your doorstep, but without as many tourists.
Follow the Footsteps of Pirates
If you love the idea of pirates, then you have to head off to Banderas Bay for the Pirate Tour on La Marigalante, a reproduction of an authentic Spanish galleon.
There’s nothing serious about this tour though, and it feels a little like being in a Hollywood movie – with the crew dressed as buccaneers! It’s a whole day of fun, with breakfast in the galley, followed by a short sail to the beach at Majahuitas beach, where you can snorkel, swim, play beach volleyball, or just lie on the sand.
If you prefer, you can opt for the grown up version, which is a night cruise.

Dine at Chino’s Paradise
Ever wanted to eat lunch, or dinner, in a jungle setting, at the meeting of two rivers, right alongside the natural rock pools?
Well, that’s not a trick question. That’s what you get at Chino’s Paradise, along with good food, and reasonable prices. Then, if you remembered your swimsuit, you can jump in the pool to cool off. They do call this paradise for a reason!
Take the Tequila Tour
The Tequila region is not technically in Puerto Vallarta, but its close enough that there are tours leaving by twin engine plane on a daily basis.
After a short flight of around forty five minutes, you’ll reach tequila country, where you’ll get to see the agave plantations, see tequila being made, tour the famous factories, and sample the fiery product. Beware though – this is potent stuff, so make sure you’ve eaten a good, greasy breakfast before you take the trip!

Float Over Banderas Bay
Another unique experience in Puerto Vallarta is the hot air balloon trips over Banderas bay.
It’s a short flight, at around an hour, but since you float just above the tops of the trees in the jungle, and you’ll actually see the deer, alligators and other animals that live there, so while it’s short, it’s definitely one flight you’ll never, ever forget.
Not to mention that it’s also a lot more romantic than any commercial flight you’re ever likely to take.
Las Caletas
Yes, there are amazing beaches in Puerto Vallarta; however, if you really want isolated exclusivity, far from the crowds, then the isolated beach at Las Caletas is a perfect choice. 
In fact, it can only be reached by boat, so you’re sure to avoid the crowds.
While you’re there, and if you can tear yourself away from the golden sand, you can take a kayak trip, snorkel, or scuba dive. There are even yoga classes, surrounded by the jungle and the beach!
And then, after a hard day’s fun in the sun, there’s a day spa, where you can have a relaxing massage, and since the trip includes lunch, all that’s left to round off the perfect day is dinner at the hotel, accompanied with a sunset cocktail.
Puerto Vallarta is a great choice for a Mexican beach holiday that offers many different activities, or just if you prefer your beaches less crowded, but no less beautiful.
