Pompeii Tours

Pompeii Tours
If you like traveling to places where you can get an insight into the world as it used to be centuries ago, then Pompeii might be a great choice next time you’re in Italy!

Frozen in Time

What sets Pompeii apart from your average museum visit is that here, because Mt Vesuvius erupted so suddenly, without warning, the entire city seems to have been frozen in time.

There’s even a cast of a dog, found chained outside one of the houses, in a museum in Naples. In fact, every piece of life in Pompeii, from the people that did not manage to escape, to their food, utensils, tools and livestock, are preserved just as they were nearly two thousand years ago.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted, it was sheer luck that the eruption wasn’t a hot lava flow, that would have turned to stone, burying the city forever. Instead, the city was blanketed with ash, preserving the city exactly as it was at that moment. By destroying the city, it actually preserved it as a real slice of life for all of us to see.

Tourists

What’s really surprising about Pompeii is that the ash and dust that caused the city to die so suddenly, was also what preserved it. Today, because of deterioration of the buildings, artifacts and other historically important parts of Pompeii , less than a third of the city that was open to the public in the 1960’s are open to tour groups.

Even that limited area is fascinating though. It’s a little like a really well done theme park, that gives you unparalleled insight into what the life of ancient Romans was like. From brothels to the amphitheater, narrow streets to private homes. Everything in Pompeii is exactly as it was nearly two thousand years ago. It’s as if the clock just stopped ticking.

Take a Real Walk Down Memory Lane

Since many of the artifacts collected at Pompeii are in museums in Naples and other parts of the world, a visit to one of those might teach you something about ancient Roman life. Pompeii Tours

Walking down the street in Pompeii, however, seeing the political posters on the walls of buildings, or the signs on shops, the produce still on the shelves in those shops, is more like really living the life of those Romans.

It’s almost as if the city is just waiting for some magic word, and then it will come back to life. Like someone pressed pause in a movie, and the show will restart soon. That’s what makes it different to a museum. It’s real. It surrounds you. That’s an eerie feeling, but it also makes Pompeii a completely fascinating place to visit.

So it’s clear, whether you love museums, or not, that a trip to Pompeii is amazing. See the amphitheater, where modern day rock acts like Pink Floyd created tribute concerts, walk the streets, go inside the homes of ordinary Roman citizens. Time travel may not be possible, but when you visit Pompeii, it almost seems like it is.
