Cook Island Vacation

Want to travel to the Pacific, but aren’t sure where to go? If you’re looking for a holiday destination that offers a whole lot of fun, and is reasonably priced, then the Cook Islands may just be the perfect destination.

Just be warned – these fifteen beautiful islands are far flung – in fact, their two hundred and forty square kilometer area is spread over a section of ocean that is in the region of one point eight three million square kilometers – so flitting between the different islands is no mean feat!

Tourist Friendly Islands

Of the fifteen islands that make up the Cook’s, Rarotonga and Aitutaki are the most tourist oriented, with hotels, resorts, restaurants and organized activities. Which means that if you like your island holidays civilized and genteel, they should be your number one choice.

Options for fun in the sun (other than rocking in a hammock overlooking the pacific that is) include scuba diving, wind surfing, and sailing, with rental companies and training, so even if you’re a land lubber, you can try your hand at one of them.

So, if you want a romantic Pacific island holiday that includes local music, island style cuisine, and a whole lot of activity, but in a package that includes all the luxuries of home, they should be your first choice.

Back to Nature

If you’re more of a fan of getting close to nature in your holiday destination, then one of the other islands, like Atiu, Magaia and Mauke are great for hiking, bird watching and finding that little isolated, deserted stretch of beach to make your own. For a while anyway!

There are also whales in the Cook’s all year round, so if you are in the islands, taking a boat trip to one of the other, less populated islands could mean you get the added benefit of some whale watching, up close and personal!

Festivals, Island Style

Cook Island VacationIf you love a good party, make sure you plan your trip to the Cooks for the ten days leading up to August 4th, which is Constitution day. It’s then that there are pageants, drumming and singing, and a whole lot of festive activities, and you get to join in the celebrations with the islanders.

It’s also the time of the Round Raro marathon, which is a 31 kilometer race around the island, so if you’re really fit, or really ambitious, you could pack your trainers and try your luck! The Cook Islands really are a Pacific paradise, with amazing flowers, lush jungle interiors, volcanoes, and abundant bird and marine life, perfect for exploring. They’re laid back, romantic and with friendly locals, and some island style cuisine, chances are any holiday will be too short.

If you are planning a trip to the Cook Islands, one phrase you will want to know is kia orana, which means “may you live on.” Of course, if that life were in this kind of place, you’d also be wishing for a longer one!
