They’re so perfect, so huge, that it seems that even now, we’d struggle to replicate them.

What makes the pyramids even more fascinating is that we still don’t know everything about them. Not even close. There are secrets and mysteries in the pyramids that will stay locked away, and hidden, forever. Even with all our technology, all our clever scientists, and the desire to understand everything, rather than take it at face value, we still can’t uncover everything.

There’s something nice about knowing that we won’t ever know everything about the pyramids. It’s nice to know that they will continue to hide their deepest secrets, just as they were designed to, in spite of our modern nosiness.

Size Matters

When the pharaohs built the pyramids, they were a status symbol, pure and simple. The men who ruled in ancient Egypt had absolute power in life, and wanted to be remembered as supreme rulers in death too.

It’s that desire from immortality that we have to thank for the pyramids. And when you consider that Khefren, Cheops’ son, deliberately designed his own pyramid to appear larger than his father’s, it’s clear that it was a matter of status!

Pillaged and Plundered, but Still Standing

Throughout the centuries, the pyramids, and many other monuments of ancient Egypt, were penetrated and robbed by grave robbers and others. Many priceless artifacts were carried away, but thankfully, because they were so complex, many of the amazing artifacts, and of course all the hieroglyphics that tell us the story of the pharaohs, remain.

Creepy and Alien

For all the history and culture that surrounds the pyramids, and the other monuments of ancient Egypt, what remains is that they are funereal complexes. There’s a creepy feeling about visiting any of the structures, and the hairs on the back of your neck are guaranteed to stand up!

The procedures of the ancient Egyptians in preparing the dead for burial, like removing organs, and even the brain, are almost alien – even a visit to a museum where the canopic jars that hold the organs of a forgotten pharaoh, is a strange and eerie experience.

It’s this difference, this alien feeling of their culture, as well as the amazing monuments, that make visiting the pyramids, and other remnants of what is surely one of earth’s greatest civilizations, so fascinating. Just take someone along that you can cling to when the spookiness gets too much for you! And remember that in the interest of preserving these amazing monuments, access to some of the pyramids, and other attractions of ancient Egypt have been limited.
